Brett Furnas, PhD

I am a Research Affiliate with the Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology at UC Davis, and also a Quantitative Ecologist with the Wildlife Health Laboratory at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).  I have collaborated with the MWFB for many years on the use of Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) for surveying songbird communities throughout the state. In my work at CDFW, I advise on statistical design and data analysis for large wildlife survey projects of birds, bats, terrestrial mammals, plants, and other taxa, and lead studies monitoring the effects of climate change, fire, and other stressors on the conservation of wildlife diversity.  I hold a doctoral degree in ecology from UC Berkeley, a master’s degree in forestry from Yale, and a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley in physics and history. I began my career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho.
